why we read Geography

The National Curriculum Framework (2005) suggests that children's school life should be linked to life outside. This principle is in stark contrast to the legacy of bookish knowledge, the influence of which our system is still creating a gap between school and home. The curriculum and textbooks based on the new National Curriculum are an attempt to follow this basic idea. This effort involves resisting the tendency to surround each subject with a strong wall and rote information. It is hoped that these steps will take us a long way in the direction of a child-centred system described in the National Policy on Education (1986).

The success of this effort now hinges on the fact that school principals and teachers give children the opportunity to reflect on their experiences as they learn and learn with the help of imaginative activities and questions. We have to recognize that if given space, time and freedom, children create new knowledge by engaging and grappling with information handed down by adults. The main reason for ignoring the various means and sources of education is the tendency to make the textbook the sole basis of examination. It is necessary to develop creativity and initiative. That we make and treat children as complete participants in the learning process, stop treating them as customers of the prescribed dose of knowledge.

These objectives call for substantial changes in the daily life and functioning of the school. Flexibility in the daily schedule is as important as the agility in the implementation of the annual calendar, to make the number of days allotted for teaching a reality. Methods of teaching and evaluation will also determine how effective this textbook proves to be in making children's lives at school a joyous experience rather than mental stress and boredom. To tackle the problem of burden, curriculum makers have made a more conscious effort than ever to take into account the psychology of the children and the time available for teaching while restructuring knowledge at various stages. In an effort to deepen this effort, this textbook prioritizes reflection and awe, small group conversation and debate, and hands-on activities.

NCERT. The Textbook Creation Committee for the creation of this book expresses its gratitude for the hard work. The Council is especially grateful to Professor Hari Vasudevan, Chairman of the Social Science Textbook Advisory Committee, and Vibha Parthasarathy, the Chief Advisor of this Textbook Committee.
